The Invisible Aligner Process
Initial Consultation
Your dentist will carry out a comprehensive oral examination to assess your suitability for Invisalign treatment. They will want to discuss fully with you at this stage any concerns you have with your teeth and what your ideal smile and treatment outcome looks like for you.
Your dentist will then take an X-ray to assess the condition of your bone and teeth. Using state-of-the-art equipment, we will then take a digital scan and photos of your teeth. These are analysed and assessed by Dr Jung, and following that consultation and approximately 2-3 weeks from your initial appointment your dentist will be able to show you a completed video rendering of how we expect your smile to change over the treatment to give you an idea of the final result. They will also have a treatment plan for you at this point, detailing exactly how long your treatment will take for each stage. Only once you are happy with everything at this stage will your dentist proceed with ordering your bespoke Invisible aligners to be fabricated
Your First Set of Aligners
Your Invisible aligners are custom-made to fit and re-shape your mouth. They are made off-site and will take about 3 weeks to come back to the clinic, when you will be contacted and a fitting appointment booked in for you.
Your dentist at this first long appointment will show you exactly how to place your aligners and will give you detailed instructions on how to look after them and get the most out of your treatment. You are of course encouraged to ask any questions during this visit regarding any aspect of daily life wearing your new aligner.
Your dentist will also have to place small tooth attachments to facilitate tooth movement and the overall treatment . These are made from a composite resin material (the same material used for discreet dental fillings, which are entirely toothcoloured.) These are painless to place, with little more than air and water required to apply. After your treatment is complete they are easily removed without trace or discomfort.
Once you have received your first aligners and been instructed in how to correctly use them, you will be expected to attend monthly visits at the clinic so your dentist can monitor and assess your progress and catch and offset any issues if they arise - ensuring you complete your treatment with a transformed, beautiful smile.
To prevent unnecessary risk of loss, damage, or mix-up, you are also given the next stage of clear aligners that you will need for that month’s wear at each check-up appointment, so that you do not have to keep safe at home your entire treatment set of aligners from the beginning, and will always be wearing the correct set of aligners for your current stage of treatment
Aftercare
All orthodontic treatment to correct and re-position the alignment and straightness of a patient’s smile comes with the risk that your teeth will return to their original position. To prevent relapse, once your treatment is complete and your dentist sees you for your final review, they will strongly recommend that you wear an orthodontic retainer every night for life.
A retainer is similar to the clear aligners you will have been using, but it usually needs only be worn comfortably at night, as it is intended to maintain the new position your teeth are settling into, not re-position them. We also offer a fixed retainer
that is permanently bonded to your teeth lingually (meaning behind the teeth, and so not in plain sight) and your dentist will be able to discuss both options with you at your appointment
You will be scheduled in for a review with your dentist a few months after your treatment is complete, to ensure that you are getting on well with your retainer, and that no relapse or any other issue is occurring. Some patients at this stage may
consider further treatment such as teeth whitening or composite bonding to improve the appearance of their new smiles. Your dentist will be happy to discuss these treatment options with you following the completion of your Invisible Aligner
journey, or if at any point during the process you have questions, so you are well-informed about your future options and have plenty of time to make unhurried decisions about this investment into your smile and yourself.
